Exam Preparation Strategies and Tips

1. Prior to taking any Gulf Health Authority Examination, it is imperative to gather sufficient information and insight about the specific exam and its format. Seeking an advice from individuals who have recently taken these exams is crucial in this case. Do preparation according to your exam pattern and do not rely on your studies/preparation that you did for some other exams previously as each exam has its own pattern.
2. We strongly recommend preparing for exams alongside 2 or 3 study partners. Collaborative study groups can be highly beneficial during your exam preparation.
3. Avoid confusing yourself with numerous resources for exam preparation. Select a single resource that has a broad consensus among test-takers. Keep in mind that most resources share over 90% of their content and especially the high-yield material needed for success is almost available in every resource. Passprometric recommends using "Master the Board CK-Step 2" by Conrad Fischer. No body can produce 100% in the exam and no exam can expect you 100% result. So concentrate on the 90% to reproduce the passing percent in your exam.
4. Adequate exam preparation usually requires a minimum of 2 to 3 months, but some attempt the exam with only 2 to 3 weeks of preparation, which is insufficient. So give adequate time for your preparation.
5. Make a strong clinical base and refresh your GP level clinical knowledge by picking just one book. Learn and understand each topic of every chapter, do not turn the page until you are sure enough that you understood what you read previously. Engage with peers to clarify concepts if you encounter difficulties. After finishing each topic of a particular chapter, close a book and revise/retrieve the knowledge in your mind that you have read. This practice/exercise will sharpen your mind and will help you in exam by easily recalling or retrieving a knowledge.
6. Reading a book before going for any MCQs bank is very crucial. It will refresh your basic clinical knowledge, fill up your concepts blanks, solidify concepts and establish a strong foundation for solving and answering MCQs effectively in real exam. It will also provide you with a hint regarding an answer in an MCQ that you have not come across previously.
While studying a book, do not just try to memorize the stuff but try to understand and learn the mechanisms, principles and concepts. This will help you in your exam in case the question appeared to you in a bit different way. Here you will be able to apply your knowledge and concept.
7. Regarding an MCQs practice, do not go for free/paid obsolete PDF files exam materials. Studying from these outdated and error-ridden materials (PDF Files) for your exam can be counterproductive and lead to confusion rather than clarity. These materials often require rote memorization rather clearing your concepts and helping in understanding the principles, hindering your ability to provide correct answers if the exam presents questions differently. This also make you prepare narrow minded for your exam and you then expect the same questions with same options in your real exam. You are stuck if the same concept appeared to you in your exam in a different way.
8. Many doctors possess a narrow perspective when preparing for the exam. They always expect identical multiple-choice questions from their Qbank to appear in the actual exam, disregarding the fact that exams do not leak questions in advance. If that was the case, nobody would ever experience failure in exams. Each licensing exam for candidates presents different questions, but the difficulty level remains fairly consistent. While the questions in the exam may vary, the concepts being tested are generally similar. Instead of expecting identical multiple-choice questions, candidates should anticipate encountering the same underlying concepts that have been assessed in previous exams. It is crucial to thoroughly understand every aspect of a particular concept, including diagnosis, investigations, management, contraindications, and complications. Occasionally, the same MCQ that one has encountered in a QBank may be presented in a different format during the exam. The stems and options of the MCQs may be reshuffled, with questions being framed within the options or answers placed within the stems, and vice versa. Approaching exam preparation with this mindset is essential. Adopting a comprehensive view of each MCQ scenario while studying will prove beneficial during the actual exam. Keeping in mind that the same MCQ encountered in the QBank can be presented in multiple ways will aid in successfully passing the exam.
9. Avoid obtaining PDF exam materials from individuals who charge for them, as they are often non-medical individuals or scammers. Similarly, be cautious of online sessions that merely review questions and answers from outdated sources, as they do not contribute to your conceptual understanding. Invest in your own preparation.
10. Always choose a reputable and updated online MCQ bank that provides explanations. When reviewing an MCQ, focus not only on the specific concept being tested in the MCQs only but also extract valuable information and high-yield points from the explanations. Note these down, understand, and memorize them, considering that they may appear in your exam beyond the scope of the tested MCQ's concept. This approach broadens your knowledge and equips you to answer a variety of questions in your exams.
11. Candidates should prioritize their exam preparation rather than being influenced by rumors or changes in the pool of exam questions. It is essential to remember that the exam tests GP-level knowledge and will not go beyond that scope. However, candidates must have a solid grasp of GP-level knowledge and understand the different ways in which existing concepts can be tested.
12. Finally and most importantly, believing in your self is the first step to success. Always keep in mind, that if other can do it, you can do it for sure.
Best Wishes,
